Gilbert Dawson is known as both a carver and a Kwakwala speaker. Dawson began his carving practice in 1995. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with a number of fellow artists, including Beau Dick, Bruce Alfred, Sam Shaughnessy, Don Svanvyc, Joe Pederson, and Joe Wilson. Furthermore, Gilbert Dawson is the nephew of the jewellery carver, John Lancaster. In addition to his artistic endeavors, Dawson has demonstrated a commitment to his cultural heritage by immersing himself in the Kwakwala language. This dedication is evidenced by the fact that he has learned more than 75 ceremonial songs. A specific highlight of his work occurred in July 2001, when he carved many masks specifically for a potlatch that was hosted by James Speck. Gilbert Dawson's crests include Wolf, Sun, and Sisiutl. Currently resides in Port Hardy and works with fellow carver Morris Johnny.
